Challenge yourself

A few weeks ago I joined a yoga challenge on Instagram and it really did me good. Sometimes we need to change our daily routine and challenge ourselves with something new. So thats exactly what I did.

Every month there are many new yoga challenges. They all vary between 10 to 30 days and focus on different aspects. Last month a lot of the challenges where focussing on backbends. To me backbends are not really a challenge any more. I can always improve and go deeper but because I already do them in my daily practice, it’s not that big of a challenge. However there was one challenge that did caught my eye: the 15 day arm balance challenge. At first I hesitated a bit because this was going to be a REAL challenge for me. The hosts of the challenge are always posting crazy inversions and transitions that require a lot of arm- and especially core-strength.

I’ve been working on my handstands for a few months now but still need a lot of practice. I thought, concentrating on arm balances for 15 days should really help with the proces, so I decided to join the challenge. See my Instagram for all the poses. I shared lots of videos to demonstrate the flow and to really show the daily struggle with the transitions.

It was pretty challenging to keep up with the challenge. Some of the challenges post all the poses at the beginning of the challenge (so you can work on them in advance), but that was not the case with the arm balance flows. I would wake up every morning feeling excited and curious for that days post. There were many days that I would see the flow of one of the hosts and would think to myself: how am I ever going to do that? I’m proud to say that I never skipped a pose, no matter how difficult they looked, I always gave it a try. It doesn’t matter if you can’t do the pose, it’s important that you’re willing to step out of your comfort zone and at least give it a try. I learned so much from this challenge and did things that I would never have done on my own. Thanks to the challenge, I still balance on my hands daily and really notice improvement.

It may sounds weird, but Instagram is a real lifesaver to me. The IG yoga community is huge and everyone is always helping and supporting each other. I not only get daily motivation to work out, but also get lots of tips and get to talk about difficult asanas with other yogis. It feels so special to be part of this on-growing community and I’m really thankful that I get to share my experiences with others.

My advice to you is: get out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself with something new. Whether its with yoga, running, boxing or any other interests you might have, just give it a try and see where it takes you.
